DARK WOODEN FURNITURE IN SCOTLAND
Making dark furniture lighter by upcycling
This furniture commission was to upcycle 3 large wooden bookcases and also a large wooden TV unit which were all lovely wood but were too dark for the client’s tastes.
The client wanted the TV unit to be painted a bright teal colour and I suggested covering the drawers with a coordinating fabric for interest.
The orignal handles were given a deep polish and clean then treated with gold gilding wax to make them shine and stand out.
I created a moodboard for the client so they could see exactly what colours we would be working with and how they would work with their new yellow wall colour.
It was important to make sure that all the different colours and fabrics worked well together.

The 3 bookcases were to be made lighter by putting fabric in the back and also on the drawers. The client requested the Sara Raven green birds fabric as they had this pattern on coasters and loved it.
I chose to use fabric as the wooden backs were uneven so it wasn’t possible to use wallpaper. A plain fabric was chosen as the client had a lot of ornaments to be displayed in the bookcases so wanted something plain with just a little detail.
I added some interest to the fabric using a bird and branch stencil. The idea was to add some detail but not to make it too fussy.
